Arvidsjaur Municipality (Swedish: Arvidsjaurs kommun; Ume Sami: Árviesjávrrien kommuvdna) is a municipality in Norrbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is Arvidsjaur.
History

Arvidsjaur Municipality was for a long time inhabited only by the Sami people. They were back then a hunting people, living off the abundance of fish and wildlife in the area. Archaeological discoveries suggest that people have been moving through the area for several thousands of years. The name Arvidsjaur itself comes from a Sami word which means "generous water" and was originally the name of the adjacent lake.
In the 14th and 15th century some farmers settled in the area. They acquired furs and skins from the hunters, and traded them off to southern regions, allegedly in vast numbers.
The Christianization of Arvidsjaur Municipality was slow, as it was in Norrland as a whole, because of the low population, the harsh climate and the long distances. It was also commonly believed that Norrland was inhabited by magicians.

Arvidsjaur (umesamiska: Árviesjávrrie; pitesamiska: Árvehávvre; sydsamiska: Aerviesjaevrie)[6] är en tätort i Lappland och centralort i Arvidsjaurs kommun, Norrbottens län. Arvidsjaur är beläget kring kilometer söder om polcirkeln och kring kilometer väster om Luleå, i mellersta Lappland och tillhör Norrbottens län.
I Arvidsjaur bedrivs testverksamhet för Europas bilindustri, som under vinterhalvåret utför biltester i vintermiljö. Det bedrivs också turistverksamhet med skoterfärder, vandring och fiske. I samhället finns det en skidanläggning vid Prästberget, och utanför tätorten finns Vittjåkk skidanläggning. Arvidsjaur är även bas för Norrlands dragonregemente.
Ortnamnet
Arvidsjaur är en försvenskning av det umesamiska ordet árviesjávrrie, härlett av árvies (”givmild” eller ”den som ger rikligt”) och jávrrie (”sjö”), och syftande på fisket i den närbelägna sjön med samma namn. Arvidsjaur is a center for the European car industry. During the winter months, major car-manufacturers perform arctic trials in the Arvidsjaur Municipality. The town also fosters tourism by offering snowmobile tours, trekking, skiing, fishing and dogsled rides.

Arvidsjaur is a Swedish adaptation of the Ume Sámi word árviesjávrrie, derived from árvies (“generous” or “one who gives abundantly”) and jávrrie (“lake”), referring to the fishing in the nearby lake of the same name. Aruens järff by was the Swedishized name of the Sámi village where the Arvidsjaur Church was built in In the Place Name Register, the variants *Arfwids Jerfwi by () and Arfwids Järfwi () are documented.[3]
